From the bustling corridors of CUSAT to Kielce University of Technology in Poland

A group of driven and passionate undergraduate students of Cochin University of Science and Technology has been making waves with their remarkable achievements. Led by the dedicated and visionary Muhammed Siyad, lead ,Team Horizon has set its sights on an audacious goal — representing India at “The European Rover Challenge 2023” organized by the esteemed European Space Agency.

What is this ERC about?

The European Rover Challenge (ERC) is a prestigious international competition that beckons the brightest minds from top universities around the globe. The ERC, the largest robotics and space event in Europe, is held annually in Poland and is open to the general public as well as the worlds of science and business. These talented individuals converge to design and fabricate their very own prototypes of a Mars rover. With a Mars-like environment as the stage, participants must conquer an array of predefined tasks, putting their innovation and problem-solving abilities to the test. It is a thrilling and demanding event that captures the essence of space exploration and robotics.

Rising from the Ashes

Team Horizon’s journey has been nothing short of awe-inspiring. Hailing from the scenic lands of South India, this tenacious group has shown what true dedication and perseverance can achieve. Since the ERC’s 2019 Edition, Team Horizon has competed, but this is the first time it has advanced to the finals. The crew is presently finishing up the fabrication of the 75 kg competition weight before going to Poland in September. Their qualification for the European Rover Challenge 2023 places them as the finest team in South India, ranking third across the vast expanse of India, and a commendable twenty-first globally. An extraordinary feat indeed!

With strong support, the sky’s the limit

Under the guidance and leadership of Muhammed Siyad, Team Horizon has been an embodiment of passion and precision. Armed with a potent blend of technical acumen and indomitable spirit, they have outperformed teams from prestigious universities, leaving notable names such as Imperial College London and UCL in their wake.

The students are currently collecting the fund with the aid of CUSAT, and the projected project cost which includes the cost of building the rover is roughly 10 lakh. For the initiative, they are getting the support of Kerala Startup Mission’s Super FAB lab facility in Kochi.
